Virtual Tour

Even the name conjures images of old England, when life was simpler and lived at a slower pace. The perfectly preserved and gracious early Tudor Manor House still sits “in a green lap reached by a sunken lane” as described by Arthur Mee in 1939 and the gatehouse still stands “ like a friendly neighbour of the House of God”. The house and contents have been admired by antiquarians, historians and writers for more than two centuries and on entering through the oak studded front door today it is impossible not to be enchanted and bewitched ; the stone floors are worn, the oak panelling and doors are deeply patinated and the air is laced with the aroma of old books and wood smoke. Like the house itself, the contents do not disappoint; medieval stained glass, Tudor textiles, Queen Anne silver and magnificent heirloom furniture made for another family seat, Ven House, across the border in Somerset, at nearby Milborne Port. After almost 300 years the tenure of the Medlycotts has come to an end and everything is to be sold. Good old-fashioned house sales are a rarity these days and this auction at Sandford Orcas Manor may well be remembered as one of the last.
