Silver & Objects of Vertu

Silver & Objects of Distinction

Whether antique or modern, Irish, Scottish, or a regional rarity, silver continues to captivate collectors. Duke’s Silver Department handles a wide range of pieces spanning centuries, styles, and celebrated makers, including Paul de Lamerie, Benjamin Smith, Paul Storr, and Hester Bateman.

We regularly achieve strong results for both decorative and functional silver, from trophies and tableware to sculptural works and rare historical pieces.

Recent highlights include:

  • A Late Victorian Silver Two-Handled Trophy of nautical inspiration by Walker and Hall, Sheffield, 1900 - sold for £7,540*
  • A George V Silver Model of an Elizabethan Warship - sold for £4,680*
  • A German Silver Boar’s Head Stirrup Cup - sold for £6,500*
  • An Exceptionally Rare Irish Silver-Gilt Chalice, circa 1480 - sold for £49,400*

Alongside silver, our sales also feature Objects of Vertu—treasured for their wondrous variety, fine craftsmanship, and often playful design. These may include snuff boxes, bodkins, cigarette cases, necessaires, and pin cushions, often worked in precious materials such as gold, tortoiseshell, rock crystal, and enamel.

Items by luxury houses such as Fabergé, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels are particularly sought-after by our buyers.

We hold two dedicated silver auctions each year, with select pieces also included in our Fine and Avenue Sales, depending on age and significance.
